We're on our way...
Nessun Dorma’s odyssey through the history of 80s and 90s football is now well and truly underway with our series on 1980/81 and we hope that you’re enjoying it.
If you haven’t started with us yet then there are plenty of shows ready and waiting for you to dive into. The farce that was the European Championship of 1980 was brilliantly brought to life by Jonathan O’Brien. Pat Murphy led the way in a two part series looking at how Ipswich Town, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur shared the glory around. This week, in contrast, the American author Stephen Brandt takes us into the unfulfilled potential of a young Crystal Palace side, once predicted to be the ‘Team of the Eighties’.
To provide a little colour to the footballing journey, Gary Naylor, Mac Millings and Mike Gibbons battled it on The Sport Draft to try and capture the strongest line up for the sporting year of 1980. This was how they got on and you can cast your vote for the winner here.
On our Patreon site Rob Smyth sat down with Martyn to answer some excellent listener questions on football history and catch up on Rob’s thoughts on the stories so far.
Still to come in this run, there is Tony Evans on Liverpool’s return to the summit of European football and the possible origins of the famous ‘perch’, Wayne Barton on the sporting and aesthetic reasons for Manchester United’s decision to sack Dave Sexton plus the first episode of the Pop Culture Draft and a sporting palate cleanser in between seasons as Rob, Gary and ‘The Rest is History’s Dominic Sandbrook will join Martyn to talk about the cultural significance of Botham’s Ashes and our need for a main character in sport and politics.
As always, if you have any suggestions for show topics as we wind our way through the seasons then please let us know at nessundormapodcast@gmail.com.
